Third-Party Transceiver Myth-Busting

July 23, 2024

Many of us will recognize this picture: you’ve ordered your new core switch, paid prime for a suitable, scalable and future-proof architecture and now you need to populate the empty ports. Of course, you could purchase the transceivers from the same OEM as your switch, but this will -more often than not- double and triple your initial expenses. You are hesitating: should you get the transceivers from the original manufacturer of your switching hardware and stretch your budget even further, or should you choose for a third-party brand of compatible optics for a fraction of the price? Is there no risk involved with those cheaper modules?

To ease your mind and to help you finding the best solution for your specific requirements, we have gathered and debunked the most common misconceptions about the use of third-party compatibles in your network.

Misconception 1:

“Third-party optics will void your OEM warranty and you will be refused support.”

Wrong! Original equipment manufacturers may not insist on the use of their branded transceivers as a condition of warranty. This would be considered a tying arrangement and violates both EU- and US law (EU: TFEU Article 101f., US: Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and Sherman Antitrust Act).

Misconception 2:

“Third-party transceivers are of inferior quality and will lead to poor performance in my network.”

Wrong! Our transceivers are manufactured to the same strict standards as the OEM’s branded transceivers. In fact, there are only a few manufacturers in the world with a complete production line, such as Finisar, Avago, e.a. In most cases, Speeddy transceivers are even produced, tested and certified in the very same factories as their OEM branded counterparts.

Misconception 3:

“The only reliable transceivers are those sold by the original equipment manufacturer.”

Wrong again! A lot of third-party transceivers meet and even exceed OEM specifications. All Speeddy transceivers and direct attach cables are subject to rigorous testing to ensure the seamless integration and guarantee their faultless function in your network.

Now, let’s conclude with the most persistent one…

Misconception 4:

“He who buys cheap pays twice...”

You’re afraid that if you choose the more economic third-party transceivers and consequently run into troubles, you will not only lose your investment but also have to empty your pockets once more to purchase the more expensive OEM solution after all…

Rest assured: if you are encountering issues with our Speeddy products, our expertly trained and highly available team of specialists gladly remains at your disposal to assess and solve any potential issue in the shortest delays; but, also in the unlikely case that we cannot solve a problem remotely, we’ve got your back: all Speeddy products are covered by Lifetime Warranty.

“So I should rather buy SPEEDDY products than OEM transceivers?”

Of course, the answer to this question can never be straight forward, always depends on many different technological, economical and strategical factors, and needs careful analysis of your specific situation and requirements. However, Speeddy transceivers offer many advantages, worth your consideration:

  • PRICE
our third-party transceivers are much more economic than OEM-branded ones: typical savings range between 70% and 98% and material-related defects are covered by lifetime warranty.

  • FLEXIBILITY
often, OEMs only offer a limited base-range of transceivers that does not include all available power budgets, BiDi- and WDM-support e.g. Speeddy also supplies legacy formats and compatible transceivers for technologies, that were not originally part of the OEMs portfolio.

  • BETTER INDUSTRY
By not letting yourself being locked-in by the original vendors, you are actively contributing to a more open and flexible market that thrives on healthy competition in R&D, manufacturing and supply, and therefore more easily adapts to the customers’ ever-evolving needs.

If you still have doubts or are unsure about how Speeddy can make your fibre-optical network more performant, economic and future-proof, send us a message now and our specialists will get back to you in the shortest delays.
